Paul Varney

The Managing Partner in Varney & Associates is Paul Varney.

Paul Varney combines broad business experience and extensive practical knowledge in successfully managing leading clubs and hotels within the luxury quality London market. Paul started as a trainee at Monkey Island Hotel, Bray, and developed a passion for the hospitality business.

He then moved to the Restaurant Schutzenhaus, Basel, Switzerland for a year before starting as a management trainee with the Savoy Group in 1978. From there he progressed to the Dedham Vale Hotel (now Milsoms) with Gerry Milsom and then onto the Stafford Hotel with Terry Holmes.

In 1985 he discovered Clubs and took on the Turf Club before moving to The Caledonian Club, as Club Secretary, in 1988 where he stayed until 2008. He now runs his own business providing consultancy and interim management to Clubs.

Additional Consultants.

In addition, Varney Associates have a number of consultants with specialisations in such areas as Club management, recruitment, marketing, HR and accounting. However, all of these additional consultants have one thing in common, they have all worked at a senior level in major membership organisations.

Peter Owen

Since January 1991 until retirement on 26 June 2015, General Manager and Secretary of The Royal Air Force Club, Piccadilly, London. The freehold clubhouse (Grade II listed) comprises 92 letting bedrooms, dining room, ‘tavern’, 2 further bars, 8 function/conference rooms, library; business centre and 2 squash courts. 23,000 Members and 140 staff. The Club is a registered Charity. Prior to that from  1988-1990 Peter was Manager of the SAS Arlandia Hotel at Stockholm airport 343 bedroom, 4 star, airport hotel operated by SAS International Hotels. Heis other roles include; Food & Beverage Manager of the Sunwing Gambia (SAS Leisure) followed by General Manager of the Pamodzi Hotel, Lusaka. (British Caledonian/Copthorne). Peter started his career as a Savoy Company management trainee  with two years at Claridges and two years at the Hôtel Richemond in Switzerland including the Ecole Hôtelière de Lausanne.

Peter has been an Associate of V&A since 2016, and his first role was as the Acting Secretary/CEO of the Naval & Military Club, and he is curently Acting Secretary/CEO of the Lansdowne Club.
